The Beaches of Nosara

Alta Vida de Nosara and the town of Nosara sits just behind several kilometers of Pacific Ocean beaches. Today, those beaches remain untouched as national parks and sea turtle refuges. The Beaches of Nosara are considered by many to be the gems of Guanacaste's Gold Coast.

Nosara's beaches have remained pristine due to the diligent efforts of the expatriate community. A 40+-year environmental campaign has successfully deterred large-scale high-density development that would encroach the Maritime Zones that protect the beaches. This achievement is known world-wide and is recognized with the Government’s "Blue Flag" award.

Playa Guiones

Guiones is three miles of un-interrupted clean, white sand with quality, consistent waves, offering ideal surfing conditions for both beginners and accomplished wave-riders. The beach is a frequent sunset destination for visitors and locals alike. Playa Guiones is part of a National Wildlife Refuge. No motorized vehicles are permitted on Playa Guiones.

Playa Garza

Just to the south of Playa Guiones, around Punta guiones is Playa Garza. This beach is the launching point for the area’s famed sport fishing activity. The beach is protected by a reef line offshore. Garza is a fishing village with quaint bars and small local restaurants.

Playa Pelada

The next beach to the north of Playa Guiones is Playa Palada, offering postcard scenery, including dramatically crashing waves on and through a blowhole that occurs in one of the many stunning rock formations. A favorite for swimming, it has seven natural caves. A local fishermen can take you to see dolphins or turtles just offshore.

Playa Nosara

Playa Nosara is one of the area’s two black sand beaches. It’s a more deserted stretch, popular with gulls, herons and local fisherman because Cost Rica's two longest rivers empty into a lagoon behind Playa Nosara, offering excellent in-shore fishing. It’s the best place to observe locals using ancient fishing techniques, including the graceful hand tossing of enormous nets. If you stop by early in the morning here or at Pelada, you can buy the first catch of the day right off the fishermen.

Take a kayak or canoe up the river to explore a unique wonderland of animals and tropical vegetation.

Playa Ostional

The other black sand beach is the second largest nesting place in the world for olive Ridley turtles. Local residents can tell you the right time of the month to see the arribada, the arrival of thousands of turtles who swarm ashore to lay eggs. Sometimes there are as many as 150,000 turtles coming ashore to lay millions of eggs in the sand. Playa Ostional is one of the few places in the world where you can observe this exciting phenomenon.
